Get the Pinkture? Pink Beauty for Valentine’s Day and Beyond

With Valentine’s Day Right around the corner, I’ve got Pink on the brain!  And, as much of a cliche as it may seem, we all need some pretty pinks in our beauty arsenal to perk up our moods and our color palettes.  Here are my favorite pink products of the moment:

Eyes: Rimmel London, Glam’Eyes HD Eyeshadow in “True Union Jack” is my pink pick for the eyes.  The rock-star pink is the focal point of the palette and has a light shimmer that gives an eye popping reflective quality to lids.  Use every color in the quad to create a complete and complex “London Look.”

Lips: 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Lip Butter in “Raspberry” is one of my all time favorite tinted lip butter/balms.  Not only does it give a beautiful soft coloring to my lips without feeling waxy or greasy like some lip butters but, it is all natural and 99% organic.  This healthy and hydrating butter is also a great source of natural antioxidants and vitamins which will leave your lips kissable and soft for many V-days to come!

Lips:  Gourmet Body Treats, Gourmet Lip Gloss in “Melon”  is my gloss pick.  Made with Organic Sunflower Oil, this gloss will leave your lips naturally hydrated and never sticky.  This gloss has a beautiful shimmer that gives the lips a fuller and sexier look.  It is also cruelty free and vegan.  Gourmet Lip Gloss from Gourmet Body Treats is a gloss Healthy enough to eat, and is so deliciously lovely…you might be tempted to!

Lips: Luxx Cosmetics, Ultimate Lipstick in “Watermelon” is one of my all time favorite lipsticks and possibly my favorite shade of all time.  I have featured this lipstick on Lash Girl multiple times because of the trueness of pigment (What you see in the tube is what you get on your lips) and the luxurious feel and finish.  This shade is non-shimmery and gives a semi-glossy finish. If you are on the prowl for the perfect pink lipstick, look no further!

Face: Smashbox Double Exposure Lip and Cheek Color in “Irresistible” is an amazing cream blush which gives a gorgeous skin-like finish.  I received this as a free gift with one of my Smashbox purchases but it quickly became the star of the show in my blush department and I haven’t used anything else in months. I would not recommend this for oily skin because it is a gel-like formula.  However, for normal-dry skin it gives a beautiful glow and flush to the face that you will fall in love with.

Face: Mally Perfect Prep Poreless Primer is the perfect base for flawless makeup coverage every time.  As a gal who suffers from dry skin, I need a primer that will not only even out my skin for foundation coverage but will also lock in my skin’s moisture.  It can even be applied over moisturizer for a super strong beauty mask you can sleep in.  With or without makeup on, my complexion is much improved thanks to this amazois pink primer!

Body: Gud Natural Body Butter in “Floral Cherrynova” is my favorite superbly scented body butter of all time.  I have been using this body butter for over a year now and I never get tired of the sexy aroma or the silky smooth texture.  And, with an entire line of products in matching scent (shampoo, conditioner, body mist, etc.)  it is easy to turn Valentine’s Day or any date night into a frisky and fragrant night you won’t soon forget!

Nails: Zoya Professional Lacquer in “Happi” Mieko” and “Kylie” are my three go-to pinks of the moment.  However, I don’t think there will ever be a Zoya shade that I purchase that I do not love.  Zoya is the brand to buy if you love beautiful, unique, and durable polishes in a rainbow of shades.  The colors won’t chip or fade and your tips and toes will always look lovely!

What are your favorite pink products of the moment?  Leave me a comment below for your chance to win one of the three Zoya shades mentioned above!*

Rimmel Challenge 7: Travelling Smart

Summer won’t last forever and everyone is planning out their last little getaway before the air gets nippy once again.  So, for Challenge 7, Rimmel London asked the Rimmel 10 girls to talk about our traveling essentials, fashion, beauty, even a play list!

My family and I love to go on little weekend getaways to lakes and beaches around Texas so, this is a little peek into things I’d be likely to take for 2-3 days worth of day and evening activities.

First, let’s talk fashion.  I’m not a high maintenance gal by any means and I like to pack clothes that I won’t need to iron later and that I can use more than once.  Here’s a sampler of things I might pack on a getaway:

Above you will see 2 tops, a blue dress casual and a plain white tank.  Then, I have an accent piece which is the blue and coral cover.  I also have an airy poly blend dress that won’t wrinkle no matter how badly I fold it, a hot pink swimsuit, and a great pair of comfy denim shorts.  Below, you will see a few of the ways I put these pieces together to make several different outfits to suit most getaway needs.

Above, you will see 4 different looks however, I could have 5 if I wore the white tank alone which is also a great look.  The First look I would wear out to  a nice lunch or even for a night out at a bar/music venue.  The second look is great for a brunch, sightseeing, and shopping.  Third, you will see I have used my denims yet again for before/after getting wet (hey I’m a mom, I have to cover my cheeks!).  Lastly, a great Summer dress with a fun print for a date night or a nice evening out with the family. As you may also notice, I only wore the same two pairs of sandals for all the looks and they can be interchnged to dress up or down certain outfits.  Shoes are the bulkiest items you will bring so, choose wisely and comfortably!

As well, I chose to skip out on all the styling irons, blow dryers and other bulky items and wear a chic bun with everything, which I very much enjoy anyhow.  As well, I kept the makeup simple.  Here’s a close-up:

Obviously, I wouldn’t wear that much eye makeup to the beach but, this is a general makeup look I would use on vaycay because it is simple, fresh, and pretty.  Pink gloss is enough for most days but I do always bring along a bold red lipstick like Lasting Finish shade 01 in case things get romancy! A neutral eye and a little mascara finish off the look and I can also use the lightest shade in my shadow palette “English Rose” as a highlighter to give my skin a lovely glow.

As far as makeup items go, I also like to travel light.  I choose a foundation that is a shade or two darker than I am because I know that I will get a little tan while I’m gone.  A great primer like Rimmel’s Fix and Perfect is great on the hot days when foundation is much too much but you still want a smooth even complexion.  A mascara and liner are always essential for me and when I don’t wear mascara, I will still wear the liner to give my lash-line a thicker look.  Again, English Rose is a great Neutral palette which is multifunctional as a highlighter and the Red Lippie is multifunctional as a blush. Lastly, a pink gloss for a simple sexy shine everyday and some tweezers in case things get too hairy. :)

The makeup wipes go along with me everywhere, its great relief on a hot day for a sweaty forehead and, let’s be real, to freshen stale pits.  I also like to bring along jewelry, especially earrings because my lobes loathe nudity.  I made all the earrings you see above and the cute clock necklace was a gift from Rimmel and an everyday accessory for me now.

Throw in some cool shades and you have the makings of the cutest darn road trip ever.  Best of all, it can all fit in a trendy beach bag so you will be travelling VERY light.  The one you see below is filled with everything, even the shoes, and is from H&M.

Last but not least, you will need some trendy tunes to hold you over on a short flight or a few hours in the car.  Below are a few of my must-haves for, well, ever and ever. I never get tired of these.  I hope you enjoyed this travelling essentials guide, leave me a comment and tell me your fave travel tips!

Happy Trails!

Coral Fixation: Rock the season’s hottest shade with Revlon

Although peaches, corals, oranges, and apricots are all the rage during the Summer, I must admit- I’ve been known to rock a coral all year round.  And, with the perfect coral in your arsenal it’s hard not to crave a bright fun lip, nail, or cheek color any time.

For July, H-E-B hooked us up with some absolutely amazing Corals from Revlon and I am so pumped to announce that I am also able to share this amazing set of goodies with TWO of you lashionistas! Check out the loot:

Want to win an AMAZING set of goodies from Revlon like this one? Read on!

  1. Revlon Colorburst Lipgloss in “Sizzle”
  2. Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in “Siren”
  3. Revlon Nail Enamel in “Siren”
  4. Revlon Colorstay Polish in “Marmalade”
  5. Revlon Top Speed Fast Dry Nail Enamel in “Peachy”
  6. Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in “Rendezvous”
  7. Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter in “Tuti Frutti”

My favorite items out of the set were definitely the Polish in “Marmalade” which is SO buttery smooth and long lasting as well as the Colorburst Gloss in Sizzle which is extremely rich in color for a gloss but non-sticky and such a lovely vibrant color that can stand alone without lipstick.

For a softer look on the lips, the Balm Stain is the way to go as the pigment is very light and the texture is truly smooth.  Here is an all coral look I came up with using the goodies in this set:

On my lips, “Rendezvous” Balm Stain plus a top coat of the gloss in “Sizzle.”  On my lids and cheeks, I am actually using Rendezvous as both a cream shadow and blush! It gave my skin a lovely sheen and it didn’t crease on my lids. Score for multifunctional products!

Exploring my Mexican heritage with Rimmel London

This month, Rimmel London challenged the Rimmel 10 girls to “flex” our beauty muscles and go for the gold using Rimmel products.  As you probably know, 2012 is a huge year for London and in honor of the big games, we were challenged to explore our own heritage through makeup and fashion.

This particular challenge had me excited from the start because my Mexican heritage and Hispanic culture offer so many creative avenues to explore.  I chose to represent my Mexican heritage in three very different ways using ONLY Rimmel London Makeup. I hope you enjoy the outcome!

Look 1: Chola
The term “Chola” in this case, means a style of dress and makeup that represents a more urban look which is very particular in certain Mexican communities.  It is sometimes affiliated with gang culture however, the styling and trends of cholas has been updated and worn by many trendsetters including Gwen Stefani and Kim Kardashian.  Here is my interpretation of the look using all Rimmel London Makeup:

I updated the look by wearing tight black pants and heels instead of the traditional Dickie’s and converse style.  However, I used a jacket with metal hardware and a man’s undershirt to stay true to the masculine aspects of the style.  And of course, a hard-core attitude helps!

I loved creating an updated chola look, it really brought back memories of some of my girlfriends’ style growing up.  My parent’s never let me experiment with the style back then  (thanks mom and dad) so I finally got my chance to rock this look!  Below you will see me beside “Sad Girl” a chola character from the 90′s film “Mi Vida Loca.”

Look 2: Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)

Dia de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday observed very heavily in many parts of the U.S. including my region (South Texas).  During the Dia de los muertos celecrations, families get together to celebrate the lives of loved ones who have passed on.  Many regions even have gatherings at cemeteries, parades, and festivals dedicated to remembering the dead.  As well, the skull and the skeleton are prominent symbols during this time and are used in many ways during the holiday from bread and cakes to skulls made out of sugar, to makeup.  This is my Day of the Dead representation using all Rimmel London Makeup:

Above you will see me shrouded and dressed all in black.  Beside me is a painting by Kerry Meyer, a talented local artist and a very close friend.  Work like Kerry’s is extremely popular where I live and it is a great representation of the spirit of Day of the Dead.

This makeup was a real challenge as it is usually done with paint and I used Rimmel London products.  However, I love the way it came out and I think it has a very chic and more simple way of expressing the skeleton symbol.

Look 3: Modern Mexican Style

For my final look, I took aspects of my Mexican heritage and represented them in, what I think, is the most current style.  Below, you will see me in a dress that is very similar to the traditional Mexican embroidered peasant dresses and blouses but with a much more modern shape.  Where the traditional dress has more of a boxy, moo-moo look to it, you can see that my dress is more fitted with small straps.  However, the embroidered flower patterns and red stitching at the bottom ensure that there is no mistaking this is a Mexican inspired garment.

For my makeup, I used a bold coral lipstick from the Lasting Finish by Kate collection (12) to connect to the bright colors in the dress.  I kept my eyes simple using browns and bronzes and I maximized my lashes using Rimmel’s new Scandaleyes Lycra Flex Mascara.

Lastly, I used Rimmel Primer, Foundation, and blush to create a healthy glowing skin that looks good on every heritage!

I hope you enjoyed taking a peek at these makeup looks, inspired by my Mexican heritage.  Consider yourself challenged to do the same, it is a lot of fun!

John Frieda Styling Brushes and Full Volume Hair Dryer review and Styling Brush Giveaway

Howdy Lashionistas!

This month’s beauty pick of the month from HEB was the line of John Frieda Styling brushes.  There was a porcupine round brush, a Thermal Round brush, a Paddle brush, and a Cushion brush.  I also received an amazing new hair-dryer, the John Frieda Full Volume Dryer but I will get to that in a minute.

The first thing you have to consider when testing the effectiveness of a brush is hair type.  My hair is extremely dry and highly wavy so, any kind of brushing with brushes like the rounded porcupine brush or the thermal round brush just fluff up my hair to a static infused, kinky mess.  Therefore, I will not spend to much time on these except to say that they are both high quality brushes and should work wonderfully on the right hair types.

Click HERE for an exclusive coupon from HEB.

With that said, the Paddle brush and the Cushion brush are amazing! They have silicone bristles scattered throughout the brush in addition to the regular bristles which help to smooth out hair like mine- especially when hit with a dryer.  It didn’t make my hair look anywhere near like the model’s hair on the packaging however, I did notice a more tame outcome that when I used my normal plastic bristled paddle brush.

I used the brushes and dryer to style my hair for a recent Rimmel London challenge where I had to recreate a look from a photo of my mother.  While I was quite happy with the look overall, it does prove that no brush and dryer can replace some hard core hair rollers and some hairspray (which is what mom used to get that kick-ass hairdo 40 years back)!

The dryer is an awesome piece of equipment and by far, the most heavy duty hair styling tool I have ever used.  If you’re like me and have never used a professional grade dryer before, it makes a huge difference.  I’m talking 20-30 minutes of drying time with my $10 dryer is knocked down to 5-10 minutes with the Frieda Full Volume Dryer.  It is POWERFUL and versatile with 3 different attachments for more focused styling and diffusing.

There are a couple of downsides to it though.  Firstly, it is heavy.  When you are twirling a brush in one hand and holding the dryer in the other, your arm and wrist will get tired.  If you are not use to a tool of this heft, it will be uncomfortable at first.  As well, the setting buttons on the dryer are in switch form and on the handle so you might inadvertently change settings from hot to cold, on and off.  For what I use a dryer for (which is basically just drying my hair when wet) it is a great addition to my low maintenance hair routine for the simple fact that it cut my drying time in half and then some.

WIN Frieda Styling Brushes

If you would like to win your very own set of 4 John Frieda Styling Brushes, Leave me a comment on the products!

For Additional entries, tweet the following (or something similar) up to 3 times daily:
I want to #Win John Frieda brushes from @HEB and @LashGirlMe

What Happened to May and Clear Scalp and Hair Beauty Therapy

Hi Lashionistas! I know it has been a while since I have posted and I wanted to give you all a little insight on what has been going on for me personally.

New home duties have been plentiful since finally settling back into my hometown.  Not only the stress of getting settled but trying to get my children re-accustomed to a new place has been difficult.  I’ve had mixed feelings about the entire experience but one realization I have come to is that I love the city I am in and I never want to leave it again.

On top of that, I participated in a grueling battle with Internet providers over who was the least stupid and AT&T finally won.  I was living like a cave-woman with no Internet, T.V., and very limited phone access because the hubs and I share one for economical purposes.  Not the ideal situation for a blogger.  Add to that various forms of shipping problems with a change of address and neighbors somehow getting my mail instead of me and it was kind-of a perfect storm for blog failure.  And that is really only the condensed version of how hectic things have been without getting too terribly (and exhaustively) personal.

So, much of my blogging fell by the wayside with the exception of a couple of blog posts that I thankfully had on reserve (all I had to do was hit “publish”).  With them, my May post on what I received from H.E.B. which was a Clear Hair Therapy 7 Day Starter Kit.  Fortunately, I wasn’t all that impressed with the system and so, don’t feel too guilty about not sharing your opportunity to win a system in time for you to actually do so.

Here is what the system looks like:

Depending on how much hair you have, a system like this may not last you a full 7 days, for that I think there should have at least been 2 conditioners in the kit.  The premise for the brand is good, “Good hair should start at the source.”  However, this Shampoo is little more than Suave Coconut Shampoo with very few differences.  Of the few different ingredients you will find in Clear from Suave- many are irritating to the scalp which contradicts the basis for the entire line.

My opinion on the system is that is is not “bad” by any means- it is pretty basic when compared to most other Shampoo and Conditioner lines.  However, why would you pay twice as much for half as much product (Suave is $2 for 22oz and Clear is $5 for 12oz)?

I Hope you enjoyed my review and thanks to HEB as always for providing me with my May product!

Makeup like Mom

My latest Rimmel London challenge was to choose an old photo of my mother and attempt to re-create her look, and capture her style.  Here is the photo I chose to re-create:

Yup, this is my mommy circa 1971.  Her bold makeup style is something I have never rocked on a day to day basis and it was quite a challenge to style an eye look that was so precise and so strong! I definitely struggled the most in trying to wear the look with the simple confidence and sweetness captured in her photo.  Here is my end result:

First off, I understand that my hair falls flat in comparison with my mom’s rockin’ cut.  I even tried to completely commit and asked my mom to cut it but, she refused! However, I think I did capture a resemblance overall and, although my mother says I look more like my father, I do see some of her beauty in myself as well.

To achieve this look, I used the following Rimmel London Products:

  • Rimmel Match Perfection Foundation in “Warm Honey”
  • Lasting Finish by Kate lipstick #14
  • Stay Glossy Lipgloss in “Non-Stop Glamour”
  • Glam’Eyes Professional Liquid Eyeliner in “Black Glamour”
  • Rimmel Soft Kohl Kajal Eyeliner in “Jet Black”
  • Rimmel Scandal’Eyes Mascara in “Extreme Black

Thank you Mom, for being such an inspiring beauty- inside and out!

Concrete Minerals EOTD with Infinity and Nightmare

Here is my eye of the day and my first attempt at black base shadow.  I used Maybelline Eye Studio gel liner in “Blackest Black” as my base coloring for the entire eye.  Then, I layered Concrete Minerals loose shadows in “Infinity” (the minty shade) and “Nightmare” (the dreamy purple).

Below is the finished product.  I must say, using a black gel base with these loose pigments gives an amazing effect.  Not only are the colors more vibrant, they are nearly bullet-proof on the lid with no fallout or color-fade.

What do you think Lashionistas? Would you wear a bold mint and purple look like this one or is it an infinite nightmare? ;)

Natural Beauty, Kara’s Way

Kara’s Way is a monthly beauty sampling subscription which specializes in providing Eco-friendly, all natural, and vegan beauty and skincare products.  I read about the company on the site, Subscription Boxes, and I instantly knew that I wanted the chance to see what it was all about.  Let’s face it, with so many tempting monthly programs out there, it can be hard to decide which one’s are unique and worthwhile but an all natural subscription program dedicated to beauty does stand out.  I contacted the company and was stoked when they agreed to let me try their very first box and share my thoughts!

My package arrived today and as soon as I cut the package open, my first cute little surprise was staring at me:

Did you catch that?  Here, have a closer look:

The Kara’s way tag is actually a special paper infused with wildflower seeds that will bloom once planted in the soil and watered!  It was a very nice intro into the type of goodies packaged inside.  As well, there was a hand-written note, thanking me for choosing Kara’s Way which is a caring touch as apposed to the usual card of product names and prices.

Pictured above, all of the lovely loot that came in the very first Kara’s Way sample box!  What I loved immediately when I saw my items was that all but one of the brands were new to me.  I think one of the main appeals of a subscription program is discovering new brands to love and share with others and I was excited to see so many names I’d never seen before.

  1. La Fresh
  2. Beyond Coastal
  3. Naturelle
  4. Honeybee Gardens
  5. Native Touch
  6. Thayers
  7. Keeki

Kara’s Way is a $15 a month service which is on the upper-mid level on the price scale when compared to other boxes.  However, the polish, sunscreen, and lip shimmer alone more than pay the $15 price-tag and these are unique, natural, and Eco-friendly companies.

Overall, I am happy with the first box and I can’t wait to start testing out all of my goodies! What do you think of Kara’s Way Lashionistas? Will you give it a try?
