Womby Wednesday: Childbirth is Beautiful but…

Collage made with Pearl Mountain Picture Collage Maker for Mac.

Yup, that’s me Lashionistas! That’s me in my sweaty, tousled, exhausted, I-just-got-stitches-where? post delivery photo. Did I care at all then?  Heck no! I had just given birth to a considerably hefty baby and was simply proud to be alive.  However, looking at the photo now…I do find it semi cringe worthy.

Trust me, I love makeup but I am not the type of person who would ever think of primping prior to birth.  Yet, in the years since the birth of my son, I have noticed a trend of women purchasing their own hospital gowns, makeup shopping for bullet-proof, water-proof, industrial strength makeup, and planning the perfect hairstyle that can hold up to a beating- or at least a birthing.

I’m still not interested in heavy duty pre-labor beautification however, I do kind of want a photo I can hang on the wall away from some dark corner of the house.  Luckily, beauty blogging has really changed my beauty habits over the years and I think I look better in general because of it.  Here are a few things I have changed since 2009 that I believe will improve my due date photo shoot.

  1. I fill and trim my brows.  This gives them a cleaner, more defined shape without any empty spaces. For this, I use Rimmel London’s Waterproof Kohl Kajal Pencil in Brown.
  2. I practice better skincare.  My skin has gone from overly dry and thus over-moisturized (and shiny) to normal/combination skin.  One of the best things you can do is switch to a good fragrance-free, ph balanced moisturizer. My fave is Clean and Clear’s Essentials Foaming Facial Cleanser for Sensitive Skin.
  3. I use lip tint regularly.  You’d be surprised how much a pop of healthy color will improve your looks.  With a good lip tint, the color will last for hours and fade to a natural looking hue. There’s a ton of tints on the market but my all time favorite is Josie Maran’s Magic Marker Lip and Cheek Stain in “Fox Trot” because it gives beautiful natural color and does double duty as a blush.

I can’t be sure that these things will improve my looks for the coming pictures but, I think I have a good shot at a pic where my worn-down self doesn’t distract from the real star of the photo- my gorgeous new baby!

What do you think of hard-core pre-delivery primping Lashionistas? I always love reading your thoughts!

Snacking Healthier with Graze Nibble Box + GIVEAWAY!

Cute Insert in my First Graze Box!

Handy cut-outs for Gifting or claiming dibs!

I am 8 months pregnant now and the more anxious I get over the delivery, the hungrier I seem to get too.  I’ll be the first to admit that I am a stress eater.

Since this pregnancy has been decidedly difficult for me, I have to say that I have indulged one too many times in Baskin Robbin’s “World Class Chocolate” or a bit too much leftover Easter Candy (Why did Mr. Bunny have to be SO generous this year?).

This is why I first became interested in Graze.com’s Nibble Box.  It is a $5 a box subscription program that will deliver a box of 4 assorted nibbles to your door weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly.  Better still, the portions are all reasonable and the options are healthy.  This program is still brand new so, you must have a special code to sign up which entitles you to a free box for being one of the first to try Graze.  I was lucky enough to snag a working code from a kind person on the Graze Facebook Page and thus began my nibbling adventure!

Take a gander at my yummy first box:

I shared my box of nibbles with my hubby while we snuggled in for a movie at home.  However, if you are the type that likes to smuggle snacks into the theater, this little kit is exceptionally convenient…just sayin’.

I took photos of the tasty snacks and notes on our reactions to the nibbles as we got our “om nom nom” on.

Left: BBQ Pistachios and Cheddar Gorge
Right: Chocolate Orange Granola and Marvellous Macaroons

 First up was BBQ Pistachios:

When I first opened the pack of BBQ Pistachios the smell swept over me   like a delicious edible cloud.

The nuts were very nicely spiced and I liked the fact that they left the pistachios in the shell to slow down the pace at which we indulged our night-time snackfulness.

This was my hubby’s favorite nibble out of the entire box.  He is somewhat of a Pistachio  connoisseur  so bravo, Graze, for satisfying his discriminating, pistachio-loving buds.  I think the baby enjoyed it too because I could feel him wiggle while I nibbled.

Second, the Chocolate Orange Granola:

This too was a very fragrant container.  It smells very strong of Orange because of the orange infused raisins.  Yet, everything in the box is so nicely sealed, I could not smell any mingling odors when I opened up my box, only when I opened up the packages.  I enjoyed this mix of granola seeds, blanched almonds, dark chocolate drops and orange infused raisins but it tasted a little, “too healthy” for my husband.  He prefers something a bit more savory which led us to our next selection.

Third, Cheddar Gorge:

Umm…something seems to have happened to my photo…*nervous laughter.*  OK, OK you caught me.  I lost myself in the goodness of it all and forgot to photograph Cheddar Gorge before I, well, “gorged” myself.  This nibble was quite good though and included cheese cashews, baked herb bites and salsa corn sticks.  My least favorite part of the mix was the potency of the baked herb bites which were like little, spiced, crunchy biscuits.  They were a little strong for my taste.  However, the Salsa Corn Sticks are magnifique!

Fourth and Final Nibble, Marvellous Macaroons:

Yes, the word marvelous is spelled wrong on the packaging with the addition of an “l” but, one taste of this coconut concoction will stifle even the pickiest grammar troll within.  This sweet treat includes amaretti drops, almond slices, coconut flakes and white chocolate buttons.  Hubby and I both agreed that the combo was delicious.  Despite the fact that neither of us cares much for coconut, we chowed down on this confection and enjoyed every last crumb in the container!

I truly loved my first Graze Box and cannot wait to share my thoughts on my second box with you all! The price is reasonable, especially since your first 5 boxes only end up costing you $15 and if you can snag a code, I hope you are as happy with your first nibble box as I was.

I leave you with the evidence of a Nibble Box well enjoyed:

Womby Wednesday

Happy Hump Day Lashionistas! Today is the first installation of something I like to call “Womby Wednesday.”  In this series, I will blog about my feelings and experiences during this last stretch of pregnancy extending into the birth of my third child.

baby boy collage

Collage created with Pearl Mountain Picture Collage Maker Pro

These last few weeks seem to be dragging on and on! At about six months, I remember thinking, “Wow! This pregnancy has flown by!”  Uh…yeah…not so much anymore.  Every day that I carry this bowling ball around in my gut seems to drag on just a little longer.

Yesterday, I was freaking myself out by Google searching complications due to having a large baby.  My three-year-old son was born at a weight of 8 lbs 9 oz.  This baby feels bigger and has caused me way more pain and discomfort.  I even have a walker for the nights when the pain and pressure on my pelvis is so bad that I can’t even walk.  Though, I do amuse myself with the fact that higher birthweight babies tend to have a higher I.Q. You’d better be a prodigy, Boy!

Still, I am a beauty addict at heart and there are a few things that have brightened my spirits during these heavier days. Pun intended.

  • (seed) Healthy Hand Cream keeps my hands moisturized without irritating fragrance and is great when hubby needs to give my swollen mitts a massage…which is getting to be a nightly event.
  • L’Oreal Colour Caresse Wet Shine Stain is an instant pick me up on those days when mommy-hood has me feeling not-so-pretty.  “Rose On and On” is my go to shade for my lips and my cheeks and instantly refreshes my face and gives me that “mommy glow” that I wish I had naturally!
  • nuNAAT Leave-In Reconstructor has kept my kinks in check at a time in my life where, fixing my hair is the last thing on my mind.  I’ve been letting my hair grow out long for my husband and to help cover up my fattening mommy arms so, any less time I have to spend styling it is a blessing!

Thanks for joining me for the first Womby Wednesday! I’d love to read your thoughts about my experiences or some of your own.  Any Mommy knowledge is appreciated!

Jamie-Lynn Sigler reveals baby’s sex with Sally Hansen mani

I am obsessed with celebrity baby news right now.  Being 8 months pregnant myself, I am excited to know how celebs are prepping, panicking, and pampering in anticipation of a new bundle of joy!

Recently, Actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler chose a creative and fun way to celebrate the sex of her new baby with her girlfriends.  She treated them all to an amazing Sally Hansen Manicure and she got a very special manicure to reveal the sex of her first child with professional baseball player, Cutter Dykstra!

Oh how I wish I’d done something like this with my girlfriends when it was time for me to tell everyone I was having another baby boy! But I am so bad at keeping good news a secret and had to send everyone the photos of my baby’s “junk” immediately!

Luckily, I am still in LOVE with the blue combo that Jamie-Lynn used and I just might give myself a blue mani anyway- maybe for my baby shower in April.

Are you interested in this nail look for yourself?  Here’s how to do it:

1. Apply two coats of Complete Salon Manicure in Barracuda.

2.  Next, use Complete Salon Manicure in Water Color to paint the top half of the nail and avoid the moon area, leaving a semi-circle of the light blue shade of Barracuda.

3. Baseball Fan? Opt for some cute nail art like Jamie Lynn by using the Sally Hansen Nail Art Pens in White and Red.  Once nails are dry, draw a circle and color it in with the Nail Art Pen.  Next, use the Nail Art Pen in Red to create the curved red lines and dashes for the stitching.

Are you an expectant mommy like me?  How will you reveal the sex of your baby? Share with me in the comments!

March 2013 GlossyBox

Hola Lashionistas,  I hope you had a wonderful week filled with more beauty than ugliness! I recently received the March 2013 GlossyBox and I wanted to share its contents and my thoughts with you.

Here is what I saw when I opened it:

The presentation is very lovely.  Each GlossyBox comes in the standard pale pink box that is very sturdy and perfect for re-purposing.  The subscription costs $21 per month and the brands carried are some of the most consistently high-end and luxury for the price that I’ve seen from any of the subscription beauty boxes.

Here are the contents of the March 2013 GlossyBox:

1. Elite Models Liner (Full Size!) in Matt Brown- $15
2. Modelco CHeek + Lip Tint (Full Size!) in Rosy Red- $24
3. Pixi Magic Tink Tint (Full Size!) in Happy Thoughts Pink- $16
4. Prestiche Essential Oil Bar Soap (Full Size!) in Rosechella- $17.99
5. Sebastian Proffessional Shaper Fierce (Sample Size) Shaping Spray- 1.5 oz
6. $40 Gift Certificate to Prestiche

Overall, the value of this GlossyBox was over $111.99.  I can only estimate the value of the Spray at anywhere from $2-$5, the full sized Spray costing $17.  This was a tremendous value for a $21 box with four full sized products and one Luxe sample.

What do you think of the March GlossyBox Lashionistas? Let me know in the comments!

Review: NAAT Brazilian Keratin Collection

I was recently given the amazing opportunity to test out the new Brazilian Keratin line of haircare products from nuNAAT.  I received 5 products from nuNAAT which included Keratin Daily Care Shampoo, Keratin Daily Care Conditioner, Brazilian Keratin Intensive Hair Mask, Liquid Keratin Leave-in Reconstructor, and the Serum Ultra Shine.

nuNAAT Brazilian Keratin Line

Below are my thoughts on each product individually based on performance and ingredients.  Be sure to read to the end for my before and after images!

Brazilian Keratin Deep Moisturizing Shampoo

Likes: Pleasant fragrance, Rinses away clean, Affordable (about $7 for 10.1 oz)

Dislikes: This product does not contain Keratin.  What it does contain, is a complex of hydrolyzed wheat, corn, and soy proteins that is referred to by the company as, “Green Keratin” and is a term patented by the company.  However, the product contains more fragrance than “Green Keratin” and uses more irritating ingredients than not, Cocamide MEA, for example.  Though the bottle does say this is a gentle cleansing formula- I do not recommend this for anyone with a sensitive scalp or irritating skin condition. Lastly, there is a warning on the bottle stating to keep the product in a cool, dry place which is more than inconvenient for anyone who brings their shampoo into the shower.

Brazilian Keratin Deep Conditioner for Damaged Hair

Likes: Pleasant fragrance, Binds well to the hair, Affordable (About $6 for 10.1 oz).  This Conditioner contains a very good amount of emollients and film forming ingredients that coat, protect, and soften the hair.

Dislikes: This product does not contain Keratin.  What it does contain, is a complex of hydrolyzed wheat, corn, and soy proteins that is referred to by the company as, “Green Keratin” and is a term patented by the company.  However, there is much more alcohol and fragrance in this conditioner than there is “Green Keratin.” In fact, there is hardly any “Green Keratin” in this conditioner at all to have any effect on the hair before it is rinsed down the drain.   Lastly, there is a warning on the bottle stating to keep the product in a cool, dry place which is more than inconvenient for anyone who brings their conditioner into the shower.

Brazilian Keratin Intensive Hair Mask

Likes: Pleasant Fragrance, Generous Quantity for the price (17.6 oz for $6)

Dislikes: This product does not contain Keratin.  What it does contain, is a complex of hydrolyzed wheat, corn, and soy proteins that is referred to by the company as, “Green Keratin” and is a term patented by the company.  However, there is much more alcohol and fragrance in this conditioner than there is “Green Keratin.”  Incidentally, if there was a good amount of beneficial ingredients in this hair mask, it would be undermined by the fact that it is packaged in a jar which would expose sensitive ingredients to the air, and to oils in our hands and fingers- destroying any beneficial properties.

Brazilian Keratin Serum Ultra Shine

Likes: Pleasant fragrance, leaves the hair shiny and more manageable without greasiness or waxiness.  $6 for 2oz and a little goes a long way so this should last anyone a while, even those with thick hair.

Dislikes: This product does not contain Keratin nor does it contain “Green Keratin.” The inclusion of fragrance and Limonene make this a poor choice for anyone with sensitive scalp.

Liquid Keratin Leave-In Reconstructor

Likes:  Of the entire Brazilian Keratin line, this is nuNAAT’s stand-out product.  Though it does not contain Keratin, it does contain a substantial amount of nuNAAT’s patented “Green Keratin” formula made up of hydrolyzed soy, corn, and wheat proteins which are extremely nutritious for the hair and scalp.  This product is not a rinse-out product which means that the beneficial ingredients have time to sink into the hair and scalp and I saw and felt a difference in my hair immediately.  I have used this item on a daily basis since I have received it and have experienced what I believe is a dramatic change in my hair texture as the photos below demonstrate.  In my opinion, if nuNAAT should ever reformulate this line, they should do it with this product as its inspiration.  I will absolutely purchase this product again and again in the future.

Dislikes: None.

After using nuNAAT Leave-In Reconstructor

What are your thoughts Lashionistas?  Will you try out any of these products for yourself?

Thank you to nuNAAT for providing these products for review!

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Review: (seed) Healthy Hand Cream

I was recently contacted by the kind folks at (seed) and offered a Healthy Hand Cream for review.  Honestly, I haven’t been responding to many of these types of offers lately because I am in the midst of a pretty tough pregnancy (I mean, either I am carrying that creature from the Alien films and it is about to bust out of my abdomen at any second or there is a pretty hefty little boy in there!).  However, (seed) sparked my interest almost immediately because I am pregnant.  You see, (seed) is a 100% natural skincare line which was designed with the elimination of toxins in a family home in mind.  You can read all about how (seed) was born here.

Call it nesting or call it obsessive but, I’ve been researching a lot of skincare lately with the new baby in mind.  I only want to use the best baby wash, wipes, shampoo, diaper creams, and moisturizers on my newest little guy.  I did have my top picks settled in all the aforementioned categories however, my choice of moisturizer, Paula’s Choice Earth Sourced Moisturizer, was so pricey ($20.95 for a 2 oz supply) I felt uncomfortable stocking up just yet.  This made me leap at the chance to try an all natural, fragrance-free, and affordable moisturizer.

Before I tell you what I think of (seed), take a moment to learn a little about the science of seeds by watching this video:

Now, as most of you know, I am not one to be taken in by a cute production like this.  I need proof, I need facts, I need to turn that bottle around and see just how much truth there is in the claims.  In a perfect world, I wouldn’t have to be so serious about my reviews but, companies nowadays make false claims, use bogus studies, and fill their products with natural ingredients that are known irritants.

The verdict?  Not only is (seed) completely honest in all of their claims, I am officially settled on my choice of baby moisturizer!  This stuff is legit.  Let’s take a closer look at what makes (seed) the perfect choice for you, your child, and everyone you know.

You can find out more about a product in the first ten ingredients than any claim, study, or poll will tell you.  Why?  Because ingredients in products are listed in order of their prevalence in the product.  Sometimes, a company may say it is made with the “Amazing ingredient X” and it is one of the last ingredients listed meaning, there is very little of it at all.  This is not the case with (seed).  They say they are full of antioxidant rich seed oils and are they ever!  An ingredient list like this is something I rarely see- it is true to the claims of the company and it is quite an impressive troop of seeds.   Plus, this formula is fragrance-free which makes it safe and gentle for the most sensitive skin-types…even baby skin!

I cannot sing the praises of this product and this company enough.  It isn’t often that a product or company comes along that you can truly believe in for being safe, honest, and generous.  I say generous because, not only is this product given in a hefty 3.5oz tube but it retails at only $6.99- a steal compared to other brands *ahem…paulaschoice…ahem*.

And, there is an entire line of (seed) products just waiting to be planted all over your body!  Here is my suggestion for the best value:  The (seed) hand scrub with the (seed) hand cream.  Together, they will run you about $17 and will do just as good a job as the Mary Kay Satin Hands set (better in my opinion) which will run you a whopping $34.

I am definitely going to be stocking up on (seed) moisturizers for my entire family and I am so happy to have a new Lash Girl Approved product I can share with my newest little seed.

Wedding Makeup: Ashtin’s Wedding

When my dear friend Ashtin and I met, we were goofy elementary school kids.  We had sleepovers, silly arguments about what movie to watch next, and played truth or dare.

Now, 18 years later, I am a married mom of 2 (soon to be 3) and Ashtin is a newly-wed!  I was lucky enough to be given a special role in Ashtin’s wedding: Makeup Artist to the Bride and I was very excited but also very nervous! I mean, this was wedding makeup.  People pay to be photographed for this special day so, the look must be elegant, timeless, and flawless.  To be sure I was up for the challenge, Ashtin came by my place for a practice run.  Have a look at Ashtin bare-faced and then, with her bridal makeup:

As you can see, Ashtin is already a gorgeous gal so, I had a great foundation to work from.  The biggest challenge for me was minimizing the darkness under her eyes yet, keeping the foundation and concealer looking as skin-like as possible.  For this, I used my Crown Brush 10 Color Concealer Palette to custom blend Ashtin’s coverage.  Other than that, the most tedious part of this makeup job was adding in the false eyelashes- which were individuals to ensure the most natural look possible.

When the big day arrived, I was pumped and prepared.  Aside from things running a bit late (when does this NOT happen at a wedding?) I think the makeup job went off without a hitch.  Ashtin did decide not to wear the falsies which was perfectly fine.  I’m sure with emotions running high the last thing she wanted to happen was have a chunk of eyelashes fall onto her cheek with a tear or two!  Here are some images from the big day:

What do you think of my first Bridal Makeup Lashionistas?  Did I pull it off?

Congratulations to Ashtin, my beautiful friend!
